A month ago, I wrote “Time to Save My Life, Starting Today.”
Celebrity magician/comedian Penn Jillette talked me into it. Penn had just lost 100 pounds in four months.
“Everyone knows HOW to do it,” he challenged me. “But NOBODY does it.”
[ad#Google Adsense 336×280-IA]”He’s EXACTLY right,” I thought.
I was the heaviest I’d ever been. It was time to make a change.
What did I do?
I got naked in front of you, so to speak. I shared the ugly truth.
I shared my body scan image (yeesh!) and my terrible body measurements with you a month ago.
The numbers were worse than I ever imagined. How do I fix it?
It turns out, sharing these terrible numbers with you, week after week, has been the secret to saving my life.
You didn’t ask me to share these numbers with you… I forced them on you.
But I have to tell you, nothing has kept me more accountable in getting healthier than knowing I have to share these numbers with you every week.
I don’t know if you’re like me in this way or not, but I am much better at being accountable to others than I am to myself… I don’t want to let you down. I know you’re not out there keeping score. But I feel accountable to not fail in front of you.
So far so good…
I’m just four weeks into it. Here are my current specs…
Height: 6’4″ (no change… ha!)
Weight: 250.2 (down 11.8 pounds)
Body fat: 34.6% (down 1.4 points, cheap scale)
Waist at belly button: 44.75 inches (down 1.75)
I’m not going to win a beauty pageant with those numbers… But the directional change is what’s important.
Many people have written in asking what I’m specifically doing.
I’ve hesitated to give specifics for two reasons:
- Because I’m not doing anything special. (“We all KNOW what to do.”)
- Because you can’t imagine all of the ways that self-appointed experts out there will tell you that you’re doing it wrong.
“Eat less, move more.” That has been my motto. So far, so good.
I will give you a very brief glimpse into what I’m doing, before getting back on track here…
The food side of the equation is quite unexciting… I’m not really eating breads or whites of any kind. I’m eating a lot of salads. I’m counting calories – very roughly. Like I said, nothing revolutionary.
The exercise side is pretty simple, too. Move for at least an hour every day. I’ve been surfing, biking, and walking. That’s really it. No crazy CrossFit regimes. Just moving for an extended period of time.
The secret of what I’ve accomplished so far, if there is one, has been sticking with it. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
And the secret to sticking with it is YOU… It’s being accountable to a large group. It’s being accountable to all of your friends.
In short, I really don’t want to fail in front of you. So I stick with it.
I’m roughly halfway through my self-imposed process of reporting my progress to you… I promised I’d report to you every week until December 21 – before Christmas.
That’s the reason for the “halfway” part in the title today. But the title is a bit of a joke… I’m not halfway through anything…
I’m on a journey to get healthier. And I’m learning that – for me at least – the best way to do that is to be accountable – weekly – to you.
How are you doing? Are you on it? I mean ON IT???
I’m telling you from experience here… If you want to make a change, doing what I’m doing might be the best way to do it…
The hardest thing, really, is Day 1 – putting yourself out there… Letting everyone know exactly where you are.
You will be embarrassed about your numbers. The thing is, nobody cares about your numbers…
I don’t mean that nobody cares about you… I mean that your numbers are your numbers… They are what they are. Putting them out there – and saying you will report to a group of people on them weekly – is THE major step toward changing those numbers.
I realize my numbers are still ugly. I realize I’m in no position to give advice on this topic.
But I have succeeded in improving those numbers. And the biggest secret to that success has been knowing I would have to report them to you.
It doesn’t matter how you get there. (But do it safely!) “Eat less, move more,” has worked for me. It has kept it simple.
Find the group you want to report to like I have… and do it!
For me, it has been the best way to stay accountable.
I wish you luck… And please let me know how you’re doing…
Regards,
Steve
